New independent chair wants improved equitable access to breakthrough medicines

Former clinical leader, Dr. Lee Mathias, has been appointed as new chair for Medicines New Zealand the industry association for the biopharmaceutical presence in New Zealand.

Dr. Mathias joins the association with a wealth of knowledge of the New Zealand healthcare system and brings with her a range of experience both chairing and directing public and private health sector enterprises.

“Medicines have a unique role in New Zealand’s healthcare services especially in the area of complex and chronic treatments. Having a strong operational background in the health system I believe that modern medicines can provide not only opportunities for both improved health outcomes for patients, but some real economic efficiencies too.”

Dr. Mathias wants to raise the awareness of benefits that can be gained from a personalised focus when prescribing medicines.

“This requires an improved and more flexible approach to the funding and availability of medicines, as a country we need to have a more equitable process for funding the right medicines at the right time.”

Medicines New Zealand Vice Chair, Alan Carter, says “We are excited to welcome Lee to the role, she brings with her a wide network of contacts which will also help to develop further relationships and collaborations within the sector.”

Dr. Mathias has replaced former chair Hon. Heather Roy who is moving on to other challenges.
